Effective RTI - Reading Teachers

Assignment 1 Appropriate Response to Intervention includes whole class instruction for all students, various supports that will assist students who struggle, and special education for students who are not progressing despite the additional support provided. Teachers need to use student's assessments to guide their decisions when to implement each tier of the RTI program. In order that students will receive the best possible intervention possible they should base their instruction on the evidence recorded through assessment. The successful use of Response to Intervention requires the involvement of a team of professional educators who, together with teachers, try to meet the needs of every student. Although there are many ways to implement RTI, reading teachers are an essential component to every successful program. The effectiveness of a program can depend greatly on the education and experience that the the professionals and teachers have. Reading professionals, through p...

Reflection of ELL Case Study Project

Zissel Levitz is a yummy, delicious, smart, 7-year old boy who is motivated to achieve success in school and performs well. He has lots of friends and loves talking and sharing his experiences with whoever is willing to listen. Zissel is an ELL as his first language is Yiddish. When speaking to his friends he alternates between English and Yiddish, depending on the audience. He is a social boy and gets along with everyone he meets in school, on the bus, or in the neighborhood. He has a lot of personality, and may need reminders to keep quiet when a teacher or adult is speaking. He enjoys sharing and retelling stories that happened to him or that he heard, and will always find someone with whom to share his thoughts. This Case Study, was a great experience that I gained tremendously from. As we have been learning about so many methods and ideas, it was fulfilling to put it all into practice, and actually work with a struggling student in a personal way. The experience allowed me to ...

Week 12 - Assignment 1 and 2

Technology integration is meant to facilitate the development of our student’s cognitive skills. Technology should be used as an extension of the mind, where students are required to use their cognitive and technology skills simultaneously instead of learning solely from the technology.  In the 21st century students can benefit greatly through effective technology integration. Teachers must take advantage of technology and encourage students to produce exemplary work. Through the links and article provided, I gained some ideas on how and why to integrate technology into the classroom. As a teacher I would take advantage of the professional development opportunities to enhance my knowledge regarding technology integration. Also, teachers need to ensure that all students have equal access to the material to all the technology that is included into the lesson. Technology is something that can enhance every lesson and teachers need to work on how to utilize the opportunity. Ther...

Week 11 - Comprehension

Expository text can be challenging for young readers because of the unfamiliar concepts and vocabulary it presents. One of the most efficient strategies for which there is an influx of research and practice is training students on text structure knowledge to increase and support their comprehension of the expository texts. When readers know the different text structures, they can predict how the information will be displayed and written. Students who understand the idea of text structure and how to analyze it are likely to gain more of an understanding of text than students who lack this skill. When students have a clear understanding of text structure and text organization it increases their level of comprehension. Understanding the text structure helps students find the information they want within a text. It is important for teachers to model and teach strategies on recognizing specific text structures, by noticing the different components of a text. Teachers should teach explicitl...

Week 9 Assignment 3

Although these assessments focus on determining a student’s level of literacy skills, and should be used within the classroom, they have different purposes and goals. They are both necessary to administer, depending on the need of the individual child. The DIBELS is mainly used as a screening test, to determine early literacy skills including Phonemic Awareness, Alphabetic Principles, Fluency and basic comprehension. This assessment can locate the struggling students to implement initial intervention immediately. The DIBELS is done through a series of fluency tests, that all take one minute to administer. The test results indicate if a student is falling below grade benchmarks, or if the child’s literacy skills are on par with grade level. On the contrary, the QRI is a more intensive assessment that includes a combination of miscue analysis, reading comprehension on both expository and narrative texts, fluency, and site words. This test affords teachers with a more complete and ...
