Week 2 Assignment 3
Viewing the many videos and articles on the Reading Rockets website I learned many important factors regarding print awareness, Speech Sounds, Phonemic Awareness, Fluency and More.
The following is a short summary of some of the interesting points that I noticed throughout my research.
Print Awareness
Parents can have a great impact on their child's success as fluent readers. When children enter the classroom they come in with the attitude towards reading that they observed in their own homes. If parents read to their child daily, children come to realize that reading is enjoyable and fun, and will look forward for more opportunities to practice the skill.
In the video, Mira was introduced to letters from a very young age, and had even begun to make believe she was reading from a text. She had an understanding of how to hold a book, and turn the pages as a result of the daily reading time her parents dedicated for her success.
Children observe and take in what they see from when they are young, and parents have the responsibility to give all they can for their child at that very young age!
Reading to children is beneficial for emotional development and helps them succeed in school.
Also, when working with children parents should realize that reading and writing go hand in hand and reinforce each other. So practicing writing will definitely have an effect on your child's reading.
Speech Sounds
Children are in tune with the sounds that they grow up hearing. Children that are spoken to and read to at a young age have an easier time learning how to read in school.
More systematic and teacher guidance - feedback to student– much improved reading , nonsense words,
Here I summarized a few of the details that I noticed while learning about the various topics included in literacy instruction!

Speech Sounds
Children are in tune with the sounds that they grow up hearing. Children that are spoken to and read to at a young age have an easier time learning how to read in school.
When parents pay attention to clear pronunciation of sounds, children can feel where the sounds are coming from, thereby able to differentiate similar sounds.
Phonological awareness
Phonological awareness corresponds to the auditory skill of recognizing the different sounds in a word. Manipulating sounds and rhyming is all included in Phonological awareness. As opposed to phonics Phonological awareness is completely independent from the written word. It is where students are hearing and manipulating specific sounds.
Separating first sounds from the rest of the word is a new concept that children are learning when they enter the classroom. Phonological Awareness is one of the most critical things that students need to be aware of to prepare them to be successful readers. Phonemic awareness is defined as "the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in spoken words."An example of how beginning readers show they have phonemic awareness is combining or blending the separate sounds of a word to say the word. Word games can help develop this skill, where they become aware of the individual sounds in a word.

Phonics
Children's reading development is dependent on their understanding of the alphabetic principle — the idea that letters and letter patterns represent the sounds of spoken language. Learning that there are predictable relationships between sounds and letters allows children to apply these relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words, and to begin to read with fluency.rs to teach the sounds in a sensible order while they build the connection of sound to letter. Having children create new words by changing a few letters is a great activity to implement in a phonics lesson. Phonics is language while linking sound and written letter.

Fluency
Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Reid lyon explains that as we practice more and more – we don’t think about the decoding, rather can spend effort on comprehension. Fluency greatly impacts comprehension, where students can direct their energy to understanding the text instead of the decoding.
Word families are a great way to buil student's fluency. This exercise helps the students recognize the base of a word, whereas they can then easily read any word that will fall into the family without hesitation. They will recognize the words based on the patterns that they have learned during direct instruction.

Vocabulary
Great techniques for vocabulary that I observed was the semantics gradient and the concept Sort. The first one the teacher provides students with a range of words on the same topic - for example size, and the students collaborate in partners to organize the words in the correct order. This activity was great as the students are learning new words at the same time they are strengthening and reinforcing familiar terms. The second, where the teacher provides the students with a list of words, and they need to categorize them- either through an open sort or closed sort (teacher provides the categories). This also allows for new vocabulary to be introduced and reinforces prior word knowledge. Modeling the strategy through meta-cognition is important and helps the students understand how their thought process should go.
