Week 3 Assignment 2
As educators pursue CCSS alignment, then, it is crucial to
design curricula and assessment systems that emphasize authentic real world
problems, engage students in inquiry and exploration and provide opportunities
for students to apply what they know in meaningful ways.
For the first learning outcome mentioned in the article-
Students demonstrate understanding of a text or
texts by working together to identify and ask significant questions to clarify
various points of view. The students sit together during a group discussion and evaluate the text through open ended questions. They record the discussion and then review the recording to evaluate the relevance of the points raised in the discussion. Teachers can provide students with self-assessing rubrics where they can evaluate their questions during
their discussion. This shows the students how they can improve their method of questioning and participation in class
discussions. The teacher can also observe the student discussion and review how the students participate as an informal assessment of their progress. The teacher can use the SMILE program as another way for students to reach the learning outcome. Students who don't enjoy participating in live discussions may have an easier time creating questions and understanding text through the SMILE program. Teachers can group students on similar reading levels together, so that weaker students will be able to discuss the text with students on their own or similar level.
For the second learning outcome mentioned -
Frame, analyze and synthesize information from a
range of texts* in order to solve problems and answer questions. Having students create a Powerpoint presentation, or an oral presentation in front of the classroom is a great assessment tool. The teacher can see how the students completed their research and understood which parts of the texts were important to include in their project. Offering students a choice of presentation, oral or through a video is helpful to the various learners in each classroom. Where some students would prefer to complete the assignment on slides, others would rather presenting orally. Teachers can have students work in partners, such as peer tutoring, where a weaker reader can work with a more proficient reader to complete the assignment.
You gave some great ideas for assessment in fourth grade! I agree that teacher observation is an effective means of assessment. By observing her students, the teacher can see if they are contributing meaningfully to the group.
