Week 5 Assignment 4


Overall, Mary was reading quite nicely with this level 2 text. She read with a 93% accuracy rate only making 13 miscues. She was self - monitoring herself too, as she self corrected 1:5 of her mistakes.
Mary read about 46 Words per Minute, and only 43 Words Correct Per Minute.
Prosody - 1 - as she read primarily word- by-word with occasional two-word or three- word phrases.

Regarding recall and comprehension – Mary was able to recall the basic idea of the text, however she had difficulty remembering exact details in the text. When retelling the story she included the two Main Ideas, but skipped out most of the details.


There were a few points I noticed regarding Mary while conducting this assessment.

Firstly, in the beginning of the assessment, she had a some difficulty tracking which line she was reading. She lost her place, and needed the teacher to point out where she was holding. This happened while decoding the passage, and the grade 2 word identification list.

Also, I noticed that a few times throughout the passage, she would first whisper a word, and then read it out loud. She was using this as a tool to help her read the word correctly.

During the passage, when an unfamiliar word came up, she would look at the first letter in the word, (Using visual cues) and try and figure it out from that. For example, the word blow, she attempted to read it as both and bowl.)

A few consistent mistakes throughout the passage - Mary seemed to add 1 letter or remove 1 letter from her words.

- the word live, she added a d to the end, saying lived, though she added t (thought)

      As this was a recording of a student, and I was working off a different version of the QRI assessment it was a bit difficult to assess the student accurately.

Week 11 - Comprehension

Expository text can be challenging for young readers because of the unfamiliar concepts and vocabulary it presents. One of the most efficient strategies for which there is an influx of research and practice is training students on text structure knowledge to increase and support their comprehension of the expository texts. When readers know the different text structures, they can predict how the information will be displayed and written. Students who understand the idea of text structure and how to analyze it are likely to gain more of an understanding of text than students who lack this skill. When students have a clear understanding of text structure and text organization it increases their level of comprehension. Week 12 - Assignment 1 and 2

Technology integration is meant to facilitate the development of our student’s cognitive skills. Technology should be used as an extension of the mind, where students are required to use their cognitive and technology skills simultaneously instead of learning solely from the technology.  In the 21st century students can benefit greatly through effective technology integration. Teachers must take advantage of technology and encourage students to produce exemplary work. Through the links and article provided, I gained some ideas on how and why to integrate technology into the classroom. As a teacher I would take advantage of the professional development opportunities to enhance my knowledge regarding technology integration.
